Wynter N. Straw Death – The victim and the culprit in a tragic domestic incident that took place on Sunday on Mallet Hill Road in Columbia have been named by the Richland County Coroner, Naida Rutherford. The incident occurred on Sunday. According to Rutherford, Wynter N. Straw, who was 25 years old and from Columbia, passed away after being shot outside of an apartment in the 700 block of Mallet Hill Road. It has been determined that she was murdered before she died. The suspect, Renardo S. Johnson, 27, from Pelion, in the incident and hours-long standoff just outside of northeast Columbia, died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the upper body that he inflicted on himself. Johnson’s death ended the incident and ended the standoff.
At approximately six o’clock in the evening, deputies with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 700 block of Mallet Hill Road in order to investigate a report of a shooting that had taken place there. Sunday. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a dead woman lying outside of an apartment building with a gunshot wound. They quickly heard that a man, who they thought to be armed, had barricaded himself inside an apartment there.
Following the initial response from law enforcement, which included numerous units from the sheriff’s department, negotiator teams remained in contact with the individual for close to three hours in the hopes of finding a peaceful resolution to the situation. At approximately nine o’clock in the evening, authorities said that the suspect stopped conversing with them. Shortly after that, they heard what they believed to be gunfire coming from within the flat. They discovered the suspect with a wound to the upper torso consistent with a gunshot.
He was rushed to a local hospital to receive treatment, but he ended up passing away there. The authorities are of the opinion that the suspect and the victim were involved in a romantic relationship; however, they have not disclosed any additional information regarding the events that led up to the crime. Both the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the Richland County Coroner’s Office are continuing their investigation into what happened. The shooting was described as a “sad example of how vicious and deadly a domestic scenario can be” by Sheriff Leon Lott, who was present at the scene during the tense standoff and commented on it afterward.
According to what the sheriff had to say, “this will significantly affect two families, numerous friends, and a community.” According to the authorities, their first response was increased even more because they had been notified that a youngster was still inside the home with the suspect. But as time went on, it became clear that this was not accurate.
