Stephen Smith Obituary, death – Stephen Smith Cause of Death – Nearly eight years after Stephen Smith’s body was discovered on a rural South Carolina road close to the Murdaugh property, his mother has vowed to find the person responsible for her son’s death and has stated that she will “absolutely” have a new autopsy performed in order to learn the truth. Sandy Smith accused Buster Murdaugh of killing her son, Stephen, with a baseball bat because of Stephen’s sexual orientation in a letter she wrote to the FBI in 2016 and which resurfaced earlier this week. The letter was rediscovered earlier this week.
According to Sandy Smith, who spoke to CNN about the incident, “I felt my son was murdered; he was beaten to death, and I think it was a hate crime.” And it makes no difference to me what your name is. However, whoever you are and regardless of what your name is, you should be punished for what you did to my son. Smith has accused the local authorities of ‘covering up critical evidence’ in order to protect Alex Murdaugh’s surviving son, who was allegedly having an affair with Stephen behind his father’s back. Smith has stated that this was done in order to protect Stephen.
After initially being classified as a hit-and-run accident, the death of Smith, 19, is now being investigated as a possible homicide, as was communicated to his legal representatives on Tuesday by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Buster had already gotten ahead of the homicide update by vehemently denying the “malicious rumors” that he was involved in Smith’s death. He said this to preempt the homicide update.
After Stephen’s body was discovered on a road in Hampton County in July 2015 with blunt force injuries, the initial ruling on his death was that it was the result of a hit-and-run accident.
But in 2021, his former classmate Buster’s mother and brother were brutally murdered by Buster’s father Alex, and it was then that SLED made the announcement that it was opening an investigation into Stephen’s death based on the information gathered. “I have been putting up a fight. On Wednesday night’s episode of Anderson Cooper 360, Smith stated that this is the goal he has been working toward fighting for. “And I’m finally beginning to understand. And I’m not sure how to explain it, but I feel like I finally have some peace in my heart.’ Sandy, Stephen’s mother, started a GoFundMe campaign at the beginning of this month with the goal of exhuming her son’s body in order to get a “new, unbiased look at his body and an accurate determination of his cause of death based on facts,” as stated in the campaign.
Around three miles away from the location where he was found, his car was parked on the shoulder of the road, and his phone and wallet were discovered inside the hatchback. Sandy stated that he would have never forgotten his wallet and that he would have at the very least given his sister a call. According to Sandy, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) did not pursue the case any further despite the fact that there was “no debris in the road” and injuries that were “not consistent with a hit-and-run.” After Stephen’s passing, Smith wrote the following in a letter she sent to the FBI many years ago: “Chris [her son] was approached at work by a young man he did not know.” Chris has been informed by this individual that he was present during the murder of Stephen and witnessed everything firsthand.
