Carey Rufenacht Accident, Death – On Wednesday, the authorities made public the identity of a man who was killed the previous week after the pickup truck he was driving collided head-on with a school bus on a roadway in the Ramona region. The man was 55 years old. According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and the California Highway Patrol, Carey Rufenacht, of Ramona, lost control of the 2003 Chevrolet 2500 for unknown reasons while heading south on a curvy stretch of Mussey Grade Road shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday. The incident occurred on a portion of the road that was curved.
According to CHP public affairs Officer Jared Grieshaber, the truck drifted into a northbound lane and struck with an oncoming Ramona Unified School District vehicle that had two children travelling in it. Both of the children were injured in the collision. “Following the collision, the Chevrolet continued in a southwesterly direction, moving partially up a small dirt slope, and then returned eastbound over both lanes of Mussey Grade Road,” stated Grieshaber. “After the collision, the Chevrolet was found across both lanes of the road.” The Chevrolet came to a stop partially obstructing the northbound lane, which resulted in the driver becoming trapped inside of it.
Once rescue workers extracted Rufenacht from the wreckage of the pickup truck, he was taken to Palomar Hospital via helicopter, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility. The bus driver, who lives in Ramona and is 48 years old, was also sent to the same medical center in Escondido to receive treatment for his minor injuries. Grieshaber reported that the two children who were traveling with her did not sustain any injuries.
